Trump Proposes Rebranding ICE as ‘NICE’ Amid Immigration Debate

United States President, Donald Trump, has proposed renaming the country's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) to “NICE,” arguing that the move would frustrate critics in the media and among his political opponents.
Trump made the suggestion in a post shared on his official X account on Saturday, where he defended the agency’s role in enforcing immigration laws and accused sections of the media of unfairly portraying its activities.
According to the president, ICE officers are patriotic public servants who carry out their duties under difficult conditions but are often subjected to hostile coverage.
“ICE has been abused by the Fake News Media at levels never seen before,” Trump wrote, describing the agency’s personnel as “great patriots” who work hard in a challenging environment.
The president said he had long considered changing the agency’s name by adding the letter “N,” representing “National,” to create the acronym “NICE” short for National Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Trump argued that such a change would make it difficult for critics and journalists to use negative language when reporting on the agency’s operations.
He said reporters would be compelled to write phrases such as “NICE agents deported a violent drug dealer” or “we visited a NICE facility,” which he claimed would create discomfort for those who oppose the agency’s activities.
“The concept I have had for quite some time is that the name of these patriots, ICE, should be changed to NICE,” Trump stated, adding that the move would “totally discombobulate” what he described as dishonest and biased journalists.
The president also revealed that while many supporters welcomed the idea, it had received a mixed reaction from some within the agency itself.
He referenced comments attributed to former acting ICE Director Tom Homan, suggesting that although many people liked the proposal, some ICE personnel were less enthusiastic about the potential name change.
Trump concluded his message by launching an informal public poll and inviting Americans to weigh in on the proposal.
“Who thinks that we should add an ‘N’ to change the name of ICE to NICE?” he asked.
The proposal comes amid continuing national debate over immigration enforcement in the United States, where ICE remains one of the most polarising federal agencies.
Supporters view the agency as a critical tool for enforcing immigration laws and combating criminal activity, while critics have frequently accused it of employing overly aggressive tactics during arrests, detentions and deportation operations.
Trump has consistently defended ICE throughout his political career and has made immigration enforcement a central pillar of his domestic policy agenda.
His latest proposal quickly generated reactions across social media, with supporters praising the idea as creative and symbolic, while critics dismissed it as a distraction from more substantive policy issues surrounding immigration and border security.
