Messi Ends Fitness Fears With Goal as Argentina Crush Iceland 3-0 in World Cup Warm-Up

Lionel Messi delivered the perfect response to concerns about his fitness on Tuesday night, scoring on his return from injury as Argentina defeated Iceland 3-0 in their final warm-up match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The victory provided a significant boost for the reigning world champions, who begin their campaign next week with hopes of becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.

For much of the build-up to the match, attention centred on Messi’s physical condition after the veteran forward suffered muscle fatigue during Inter Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory over Philadelphia last month.

The 38-year-old had not played since then, prompting speculation over whether he would be fully fit for what is expected to be the final World Cup appearance of his remarkable career.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni opted for caution by naming his captain among the substitutes, using the friendly encounter in Auburn, Alabama, to test alternative tactical combinations.

Even without several first-choice stars in the starting line-up, Argentina quickly demonstrated why they remain one of the tournament favourites.

Iceland nearly stunned the South Americans with an early breakthrough when Mikael Egill Ellertsson fired over the crossbar from close range after a defensive lapse. That miss proved costly.

Argentina gradually established control and eventually broke the deadlock through Valentin Barco. The defender reacted quickest after Iceland failed to clear a dangerous situation inside the penalty area, calmly drilling a low effort into the corner to give the world champions a deserved lead.

The South Americans continued to dominate possession and chances. Nico Paz came close to doubling the advantage before halftime, only to be denied by Iceland goalkeeper Elias Olafsson, who produced a fine save to keep his side in the contest.

Scaloni introduced several key players after the interval, including Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martinez, immediately increasing Argentina’s attacking threat.

Martinez twice struck the woodwork as Iceland struggled to contain the growing pressure.

But the loudest cheers of the evening arrived when Messi entered the contest in the closing stages.

Within moments of stepping onto the field, the Argentine captain reminded the football world of his enduring quality.

He threaded a brilliant pass through the Icelandic defence, releasing Martinez, who was subsequently brought down by goalkeeper Olafsson.

Messi calmly converted the resulting penalty, scoring his 117th international goal in what was his 199th appearance for Argentina.

The goal effectively ended any lingering doubts about his readiness for the World Cup. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was not finished. Minutes later, he launched another attacking move that culminated in Rodrigo De Paul squaring for Thiago Almada to tap into an empty net and complete the scoring.

The performance offered further evidence that Argentina possess both depth and quality as they prepare to defend their crown.

Scaloni will be particularly encouraged by the sharpness displayed by several squad members and by Messi’s immediate impact after weeks of uncertainty.

Argentina will now turn their attention to Group J, where they begin their title defence against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan.

With Messi fit, confidence growing and momentum building, the world champions appear ready for another serious assault on football’s biggest prize.
