Wolverhampton Wanderers have taken a significant step in their rebuilding plans following relegation from the Premier League by signing former England international Kieran Trippier and opening talks over a sensational return for former striker Raul Jimenez.

The club confirmed the arrival of Trippier on a two-year contract after the experienced full-back left Newcastle United at the expiration of his deal.

The 35-year-old arrives at Molineux with an impressive résumé that includes Premier League, La Liga and international experience, having earned 54 caps for England and played a key role in Newcastle’s resurgence in recent seasons.

Trippier made 160 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 and was widely regarded as one of the club’s most influential leaders both on and off the pitch.

His arrival is viewed as part of Wolves’ strategy to inject experience, leadership and resilience into a squad seeking an immediate return to the Premier League.

Head coach Rob Edwards highlighted those qualities while welcoming the defender to the club.

“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year — experience, leadership and strong characters. Trippier ticks every box,” Edwards said.

Beyond his defensive qualities, Trippier is expected to bring invaluable dressing-room influence to a squad adjusting to life in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Wolves are also exploring the possibility of reuniting with Mexican striker Raul Jimenez, who is set to leave Fulham at the end of his contract.

Negotiations are understood to be underway over a free transfer that would see the veteran forward return to the club where he enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career.

Jimenez scored 57 goals in 166 appearances for Wolves between 2018 and 2023 and remains the club’s highest Premier League goalscorer with 40 league goals.

His goals were instrumental in Wolves’ successful return to the top flight and subsequent qualification for European competition.

Although now 35, Jimenez remains a respected figure among supporters and is currently on international duty with Mexico.

Should the move materialise, it would add another experienced figure to a Wolves squad undergoing major restructuring following a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation.

Club executives believe a blend of leadership, experience and proven quality will be crucial as Wolves attempt to navigate the demanding Championship season and secure an immediate return to English football’s top tier.

The arrivals of players such as Trippier and potentially Jimenez signal a clear intention from Wolves to mount a serious promotion challenge rather than endure a prolonged stay outside the Premier League.
