Fresh controversy has erupted around world football just days before the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino named in a criminal complaint filed by former UEFA president and football legend Michel Platini.
The legal action, filed before French courts, marks a dramatic escalation in the long-running dispute linked to the corruption scandal that ended Platini’s hopes of succeeding former FIFA president Sepp Blatter in 2016.
Platini, a three-time Ballon d’Or winner and one of football’s most influential figures, was widely considered the frontrunner to become FIFA president before he became embroiled in an ethics investigation relating to a payment received from Blatter in 2011.
According to reports, Platini’s complaint alleges that Infantino and other individuals played roles in efforts to exclude him from the FIFA presidential race, effectively clearing the path for Infantino’s emergence as head of world football.
The complaint was confirmed by Platini’s lawyer, Olivier Baretelli, who said both criminal and civil proceedings had been initiated.
The development comes at a particularly sensitive time for FIFA as the governing body prepares to kick off its flagship tournament amid heightened global attention.
Neither FIFA nor Infantino had issued an official response at the time of filing this report.
The latest legal challenge is expected to renew scrutiny over governance issues within international football and could reignite debate over events surrounding FIFA’s leadership transition a decade ago.
