Makinde Begins Annual Leave August 10, Transfers Oyo Affairs to Deputy

The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave from August 10 to September 11, 2026, with Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to oversee the affairs of the state during his absence.

Makinde’s request was contained in a letter read during plenary on Thursday by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin.

According to the letter, the governor will officially resume duty on September 14 after completing the annual leave.

The lawmakers unanimously approved the request and expressed confidence in the ability of the deputy governor to ensure a seamless continuation of governance across the state.

The Assembly tasked Lawal with overseeing the day-to-day administration of Oyo State and ensuring that government activities continue uninterrupted throughout the governor’s absence.

Speaking after the approval, Fadeyi wished Makinde a peaceful and refreshing vacation.

The Deputy Speaker said the legislature remained committed to sustaining a cordial relationship with the executive arm of government in the interest of the people of Oyo State.

He also expressed confidence in Lawal’s capacity to provide effective leadership during the period, citing his previous experience in handling the responsibilities of the office.

Fadeyi described the state’s governance structure as stable and capable of guaranteeing continuity in policy implementation and the smooth running of government affairs.

The approval means Deputy Governor Lawal will assume responsibility for the day-to-day administration of the state from August 10 until Makinde’s scheduled return to office on September 14.
