Kogi Government Suspends Echane Festival Over Security Concerns

The Kogi State Government has suspended the popular Echane Festival in Ebiraland with immediate effect, citing security concerns and intelligence reports suggesting that activities surrounding the event could trigger disturbances and threaten public safety.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo, who said the move was approved by Governor Usman Ododo in the interest of preserving peace and stability across the affected communities.

According to the government, security assessments indicated that activities linked to the festival had the potential to spark unrest and undermine law and order in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.

While acknowledging the cultural importance of the festival, the state government stressed that the protection of lives and property remains its highest responsibility.

“The Governor has directed that the Echane Festival be suspended with immediate effect in view of security reports and the need to preserve law and order,” the statement said.

The government subsequently directed all security agencies operating in the state to enforce the suspension strictly and ensure full compliance with the directive.

Authorities warned that individuals or groups found organizing, participating in or promoting activities connected with the festival could face legal consequences.

Governor Ododo, according to the statement, remains committed to maintaining peace and ensuring that security considerations guide decisions relating to public gatherings.

The administration also appealed to traditional rulers, youth groups, community leaders and residents to support security agencies and cooperate with ongoing efforts to sustain peace across the area.

The Echane Festival is one of the most recognised traditional celebrations in Ebiraland and has historically attracted widespread participation from communities across the region.

However, government officials insist that current security realities necessitate precautionary measures aimed at preventing any breakdown of law and order.

The suspension is expected to generate debate among cultural stakeholders, even as authorities maintain that public safety must take precedence.
