Ivory Coast Cruise Past Curaçao 2-0 to Complete Historic World Cup Breakthrough

Ivory Coast secured a landmark place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history after Nicolas Pepe scored twice in a convincing 2-0 victory over Curaçao to finish second in Group E.

Knowing that a draw would be enough to advance, the African champions made light work of the task, producing a composed performance to end years of World Cup disappointment and finally break their group-stage curse.

Pepe settled any early nerves inside seven minutes after Yan Diomande capitalised on a defensive error, dispossessing a Curaçao defender before squaring the ball for the former Arsenal forward to slot home from close range.

The early breakthrough allowed Emerse Fae's side to control much of the contest, although World Cup debutants Curaçao refused to be overawed and created several promising opportunities.

Their best chance arrived just before half-time when Juninho Bacuna burst through the Ivorian defence, only to drag his effort wide of the near post.

Ivory Coast eventually sealed victory in the 65th minute as Pepe completed his brace in style, curling a left-footed finish into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Eloy Room after creating space inside the penalty area.

The victory means Ivory Coast finish second in Group E with six points, recording two wins at a World Cup for the first time and progressing to the knockout rounds after failing to do so in each of their previous three appearances.

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae urged supporters to celebrate the team's breakthrough while continuing to back the squad ahead of the knockout rounds.

"I am very happy with this result," Fae said after the match.

"Not everything was perfect, but keeping a clean sheet is good for our morale. This group continues to grow. They are experiencing their first World Cup together, and they are improving every day."

The coach credited the team's unity and healthy competition for their progress, saying the togetherness within the squad has been a major factor behind their success.

The result ends two decades of frustration for the Ivorians, whose celebrated "golden generation" featuring Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré never managed to reach the knockout stage despite three World Cup appearances.

They narrowly missed out in 2006 after being drawn alongside Argentina and the Netherlands, suffered another difficult group in 2010 against Brazil and Portugal, and endured heartbreak in 2014 when a stoppage-time defeat to Greece denied them qualification.

After also missing the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, this latest achievement represents a defining moment for a new generation led by AFCON-winning coach Emerse Fae.

Although eliminated with just one point from three matches, Curaçao leave their maiden FIFA World Cup campaign with their reputation enhanced.

The smallest nation by population ever to feature at the men's World Cup earned a memorable draw against Ecuador and produced fearless displays throughout the tournament despite failing to progress.
