Australia held Paraguay to a tense goalless draw to secure their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing second in Group D and booking a Round of 32 clash with the runners-up from Group G.
Tony Popovic's side needed only a point from their final group match at Santa Clara, California and produced a disciplined display to earn the result, extending their World Cup campaign for a third time in the tournament's history.
The Socceroos controlled much of the first half, enjoying 62 per cent possession while outshooting Paraguay 6-1. However, despite creating the better opportunities, they were unable to find a breakthrough.
Cristian Volpato tested Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill with a left-footed effort before Jackson Irvine headed over from a Jordan Bos delivery as Australia pushed for an opening goal.

Paraguay adopted a cautious approach throughout the contest, prioritising defensive solidity over attacking ambition. Their best chance came deep into stoppage time when substitute Mauricio unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the area, but Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.
Australia also came close to snatching victory late on when Bos cut inside two defenders and curled an effort narrowly wide of the far post after an impressive individual run.
Coach Popovic made six changes to the side that lost to the United States in the previous group match, a decision that paid off as Australia looked more balanced and composed throughout the encounter.

Midfielder Aiden O'Neill was named Player of the Match after delivering an assured performance, helping Australia dictate possession in the opening half and breaking up Paraguay's attacks as pressure mounted after the break.
The result sees Australia finish second in Group D and avoid a potentially tougher knockout tie. The Socceroos will now face the runners-up from Group G either Belgium, Iran, Egypt or New Zealand in the Round of 32 on July 3 in Dallas, Texas.
For Paraguay, the draw was also enough to keep their hopes alive, with qualification dependent on the final Group D standings.

Australia will now shift focus to the knockout stage, aiming to progress beyond the first elimination round and continue their impressive World Cup run under Popovic.
