FAAN To Replace Physical ID Checks With Biometric Verification At Nigerian Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to introduce a biometric identity verification system across domestic airports, marking a major step towards digitising passenger processing and strengthening aviation security.

The new platform, known as V-Pass, will gradually replace the routine use of physical identity documents at airport checkpoints with facial recognition technology, allowing passengers to verify their identities electronically before proceeding through security and boarding procedures.

FAAN said the initiative forms part of its broader strategy to modernise airport operations, improve passenger experience and align Nigeria's aviation sector with global digital travel standards.

The authority disclosed that the system is being developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, a company specialising in digital identity verification solutions.

In a statement issued by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority said passengers enrolled on the V-Pass platform would be able to complete identity verification through facial recognition rather than presenting physical identification documents at multiple checkpoints.

According to him, Nigerian travellers will complete a one-time registration using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture.

Foreign travellers, on the other hand, will register using their international passports and biometric authentication.

Once enrolled, passengers will be recognised automatically at designated airport checkpoints, reducing manual document verification and improving movement through airport terminals.

FAAN explained that passengers will undergo biometric identity verification before entering restricted airport areas and again at the boarding gate before departure.

The authority said the multiple verification stages are intended to reduce the risk of impersonation, identity fraud and unauthorised access to secure airport facilities.

According to Agbebire, the automated verification process is expected to take less than 30 seconds once a passenger has completed enrolment.

To support implementation, airports will be equipped with self-service kiosks, electronic access gates and trained FAAN personnel to assist travellers, particularly during the transition from manual identity checks to the new digital system.

Beyond strengthening security, FAAN believes the technology will improve operational efficiency by reducing queues and shortening passenger processing times.

The authority said the platform will also provide airlines with secure access to relevant operational information while enabling FAAN's Central Management System to monitor passenger movement across airport facilities.

Officials added that the system has been designed to support future integration with other airport technologies as Nigeria continues to modernise its aviation infrastructure.

Industry experts have long advocated for greater automation within Nigeria's airports, noting that digital identity verification can improve efficiency while reducing opportunities for human error.

Addressing concerns over personal data protection, FAAN said the V-Pass platform complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and incorporates safeguards to protect passengers' personal information.

Agbebire said biometric information would be securely managed and would not be stored on self-service kiosks or handheld devices used during the verification process.

He noted that the authority recognises the importance of public confidence in digital identity systems and has prioritised data security in the design of the platform.

Ahead of the nationwide deployment, FAAN said it would embark on an extensive public awareness campaign to educate passengers on how the system works.

The campaign will include television and radio programmes, social media engagement, airport public announcements and airline advisories to ensure travellers understand the enrolment process before implementation begins.

The authority also plans to conduct a live demonstration and technical assessment of the platform before full deployment.

Agbebire described V-Pass as a significant milestone in FAAN's drive to build a smarter, safer and more efficient airport system capable of meeting the demands of modern air travel.
