Ex-Delta Speaker Victor Ochei Quits APC After Years of Party Building

Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress, ending nearly a decade of membership in the ruling party.

In a lengthy statement released on Thursday, Ochei described his departure as a difficult but necessary political decision inspired by his commitment to service, progress and the future of Delta State.

According to him, the decision followed deep reflection and wide consultations with political associates, supporters and stakeholders.

“My dear political associates, supporters, friends, and the good people of Delta State, after deep reflections and wide consultations, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to formally resign my membership of the All Progressives Congress and move on to continue my political journey elsewhere,” he stated.

Ochei recalled joining the APC in 2016 with what he described as sincerity of purpose and strong belief in the party’s vision. He said he devoted years to strengthening the party’s structures, expanding its grassroots reach and mobilising support across Delta State.

“Together with many committed party faithfuls, we expanded the party’s reach, deepened its structures, mobilised support across communities and worked tirelessly to give the party relevance and visibility within our political environment,” he said.

The former Speaker also noted that he had long been committed to leadership, grassroots development and democratic engagement even before many current party figures joined the APC.

Reflecting on his years within the party, Ochei said he was proud of the relationships built and the role he played in encouraging youth and women participation in politics.

However, he suggested that evolving political realities and leadership dynamics influenced his decision to seek a new path.

“Leadership must continually evolve to reflect inclusion, mutual respect, fairness and the aspirations of the people,” he declared.

He insisted his resignation was not motivated by bitterness or personal grievances.

“This decision is not borne out of bitterness, resentment, or hostility toward anyone. Rather, it is inspired by my enduring commitment to service, progress and the political future I envision for our people,” he added.

Although Ochei did not immediately disclose his next political destination, his resignation is expected to trigger fresh conversations within Delta’s political landscape ahead of future elections.

He urged his supporters and associates to remain peaceful and committed to democratic ideals as he begins a new political chapter.
