The Ebonyi State Government has repatriated 28 children allegedly trafficked for child labour to Otolo, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with authorities unveiling plans to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society.

The repatriation was carried out through a joint effort involving the Ebonyi State Government and the Office of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday night, confirming that the rescued children are currently under the care of the ministry.

According to her, the state has commenced arrangements for a comprehensive rehabilitation programme aimed at restoring the children's welfare and future prospects.

The programme will include skills acquisition training, the re-enrolment of school-aged children into the education system, and the safe reunification of the children with their families.

Nwamkpuma said the intervention aligns with Governor Francis Nwifuru's People's Charter of Needs, which prioritises the protection of women and children through sustained investments in social welfare, child protection and human development.

"We remain resolute in ensuring that every Ebonyi child grows up in safety, dignity and hope," she said.

She urged residents to support the government's anti-trafficking efforts by promptly reporting cases of child trafficking, child abuse, exploitation and other forms of violence against women and children.

The commissioner also appealed to parents and guardians to discourage children from engaging in street hawking outside the state, urging school-age children currently involved in such activities to return home and take advantage of the state's free basic education programme.

She reaffirmed the government's commitment to creating a safer environment for children across Ebonyi, adding that sustained collaboration with communities would remain critical in tackling child trafficking and protecting vulnerable minors.
