Democracy Must Be Defended, Not Taken for Granted, Uba Sani Tells Nigerians

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending democratic values, warning that constitutional governance must never be taken for granted amid growing anti-democratic tendencies across parts of Africa.

In his Democracy Day message marking June 12, 2026, the governor said the occasion serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic rule following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

He described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, noting that it demonstrated the ability of Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious and regional divisions in pursuit of a common national destiny.

Sani paid tribute to pro-democracy activists and political figures including Chief MKO Abiola, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti, Hajiya Kudirat Abiola, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Col. Dangiwa Umar (Rtd), among others. According to him, their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today.

The governor noted that Nigeria has now recorded more than 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance under the Fourth Republic, describing the achievement as the longest period of constitutional rule in the country's history.

He however cautioned against complacency, pointing to recent unconstitutional changes of government in parts of West Africa as evidence that democracy requires constant vigilance.

“Democracy may sometimes appear slow or imperfect, but it remains the most effective system for managing diversity, protecting rights, promoting accountability and ensuring peaceful political succession,” he said.

Sani also commended the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their loyalty to constitutional governance, saying their professionalism has helped preserve democratic stability despite regional challenges.

As political activities gradually build towards the 2027 general elections, the governor urged politicians and citizens alike to place national unity above partisan interests.

He further highlighted ongoing development efforts by his administration, including investments in agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure and youth empowerment.

The governor assured residents that his government would continue implementing policies aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding opportunities across Kaduna State.

He called on Nigerians to choose unity over division and dialogue over conflict, stressing that the nation’s future depends on collective commitment to democratic principles.
