Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has said that Nigeria’s democratic system has not failed, arguing instead that shortcomings recorded over the years stem from leadership and collective decisions rather than the principles of democracy itself.
Speaking in a Democracy Day address titled “Of Freedom and Development,” Otti urged Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, accountability and national development.
The governor said June 12 remains a significant reminder of the struggle against military dictatorship and the determination of Nigerians who fought to restore democratic governance.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 movement, describing them as patriots who made enormous sacrifices to secure the freedoms enjoyed today.
According to him, democracy remains the most viable platform for national development despite its imperfections.
“Democracy is not ideal because it is perfect; it is preferable because there are no superior alternatives,” he stated.
Otti warned against political apathy and urged citizens to remain actively engaged in governance, particularly as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that credible elections depend not only on institutions but also on vigilant citizens willing to defend the integrity of the electoral process.
The governor also condemned terrorism, extremism and violence, describing them as threats to freedom, development and national unity.
Reflecting on developments in Abia State, Otti said democracy has enabled citizens to shape their future through the ballot box.
He highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, human capital development, public welfare and security, insisting that the state’s progress demonstrates that democratic governance can deliver meaningful development.
The governor assured residents that his administration remains committed to transparency, accountability and sustained development across the state.
