Croatia 1-0 Panama: Budimir Fires Croats Back Into World Cup Contention

Croatia revived their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, a result that keeps the 2018 finalists firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages while ending Panama's hopes of progression.

A second-half strike from substitute Ante Budimir proved the difference in a tense Group L encounter, handing Croatia their first win of the tournament and moving them closer to qualification for the last 32.

The victory also provided a fitting celebration for captain Luka Modric, who marked his 200th international appearance with another influential display for his country.

Croatia entered the match under pressure after failing to secure maximum points in their opening fixture and initially struggled to break down a determined Panama side that knew defeat would end their World Cup campaign.

The Central Americans created several uncomfortable moments for Zlatko Dalic's men during a tightly contested first half, using their pace and direct approach to trouble the Croatian defence.

Despite dominating possession, Croatia lacked penetration in the opening 45 minutes and went into the interval frustrated by Panama's disciplined organisation.

Recognising the need for greater attacking urgency, Dalic responded by making two offensive substitutions at halftime, a decision that paid immediate dividends.

Just nine minutes after the restart, one of those changes produced the breakthrough.

Josip Stanisic delivered a dangerous low cross into the penalty area and Budimir arrived at the far post to calmly convert, giving Croatia the lead and injecting life into their qualification hopes.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Croatia's favour but Panama refused to surrender quietly.

Desperate to keep their World Cup hopes alive, Panama pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came close on several occasions.

Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic proved crucial for Croatia, producing a series of important saves during a frantic spell in the second half to preserve his side's slender advantage.

His interventions ensured Croatia maintained control of the match despite late pressure from the Panamanians.

While Budimir's goal secured the headlines, much of the attention after the final whistle centred on Modric, who joined an exclusive group of footballers by earning his 200th cap for Croatia.

The 40-year-old midfielder once again demonstrated his enduring quality, dictating play in midfield and completing the majority of his passes before being substituted in the closing stages.

Modric became only the fourth male player in international football history to reach the 200-cap milestone and achieved the feat while appearing in his fifth FIFA World Cup.

At full time, teammates lifted the veteran playmaker into the air in recognition of his remarkable achievement and enduring contribution to Croatian football.

Speaking after the match, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic paid tribute to his captain.

"He is still influencing matches and to play for your country 200 times, that is a lot. We need to be very happy to have him in the team," Dalic said.

"Luka is very humble and this is why he is not for major celebrations. But I am very glad we marked this today in front of our fans."

The victory leaves Croatia in a strong position heading into their final Group L fixture against Ghana, knowing another positive result will secure a place in the knockout rounds.

For Panama, however, a second consecutive defeat means their World Cup journey is over, with only pride left to play for when they face England in their final group match.
