Brazil and Morocco shared the spoils in one of the standout fixtures of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Vinicius Junior’s stunning equaliser rescuing a 1-1 draw for the five-time world champions in New York.
The Group C encounter brought together two of the tournament’s highest-ranked teams and lived up to expectations, delivering quality, intensity and moments of individual brilliance.
Morocco, Africa’s most successful World Cup nation and semifinalists at the 2022 tournament, made a bright start and looked the more cohesive side during much of the first half.

Their reward arrived in the 21st minute when Brahim Diaz capitalised on a loose ball in midfield and threaded a perfectly weighted pass between Brazilian defenders Gabriel and Marquinhos.
The pass released Ismael Saibari, who showed remarkable composure as he controlled the ball, rounded the advancing Alisson Becker and delicately lifted his finish into the net to hand Morocco a deserved lead.
The goal sparked celebrations among Moroccan supporters and further highlighted the confidence and organisation that have become trademarks of the Atlas Lions in recent years.
Brazil, however, possess a wealth of attacking talent capable of changing games in an instant.
After struggling to impose themselves for long periods, the Selecao found inspiration through Vinicius Junior.

In the 32nd minute, the Real Madrid star exchanged passes with Bruno Guimaraes before cutting inside from the left and curling a magnificent effort into the top corner beyond Yassine Bounou.
The spectacular strike restored parity and reminded the football world why Vinicius remains one of the most feared attackers in international football.
Morocco continued to pose problems after the interval and showed impressive defensive discipline as Brazil searched for a winner.
Lucas Paqueta came close before halftime, while Thiago tested Bounou with a powerful long-range effort in the second half.
Brazil also thought they had created a late opportunity through Raphinha, but Bounou raced off his line to prevent danger.
At the other end, Morocco nearly snatched victory deep into stoppage time, forcing Alisson into a brilliant double save to deny Neil El Aynaoui and Ayoube Amaimouni.

Speaking after the match, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted he was disappointed by his side’s performance.
“I think we didn’t start very well. I’m a little worried. We lost a lot of duels and possession, but we improved in the second half of a difficult match because Morocco is a good team,” Ancelotti said.
“In the first half, we had difficulty getting out of the pressure. We could have had more control.
“Am I satisfied? Not really. I expected a better start. But things can happen. Now I’m going to focus on the next game.”
The result leaves Group C finely balanced, with both teams still well positioned to advance to the knockout stages.
For Morocco, the performance reinforced their growing reputation as one of world football’s most organised and dangerous teams.
For Brazil, questions remain about midfield balance and defensive vulnerability as Ancelotti continues his quest to guide the South Americans to a sixth World Cup title.
