The United States launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in spectacular fashion on Friday, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in a commanding display that immediately underlined their ambitions on home soil.

Backed by a passionate crowd at SoFi Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s side produced a devastating first-half performance, racing into a three-goal lead before adding a fourth late on to cap a memorable opening-night victory.

The breakthrough came after sustained American pressure forced Paraguay defender Damián Bobadilla into an own goal in the seventh minute.

Folarin Balogun then took centre stage, scoring twice with clinical finishes to put the hosts firmly in control before halftime.

Substitute Gio Reyna completed the rout with a late goal, while Paraguay’s only response came through Mauricio in the second half.

The result was a major boost for a United States team that entered the tournament facing questions over its form following a mixed run of results in pre-World Cup friendlies.

Instead, the Americans delivered one of their most convincing performances in recent years, combining attacking flair, relentless pressing and clinical finishing to overwhelm their South American opponents.

“It was a great performance and a thoroughly deserved win,” captain Christian Pulisic said after the match.

“It’s only the start of a long journey, but it’s a really good start and something we can build on.”

The victory places the United States in a strong position in Group D ahead of their remaining fixtures against Australia and Turkey as they seek to make a deep run in the tournament they are co-hosting.

For Pochettino and his players, it was the perfect opening statement on football’s biggest stage.
