Qatar 1-1 Switzerland: Khoukhi’s Late Goal Earns Historic First World Cup Point

Qatar celebrated a landmark moment in their football history after securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup point with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Group B.

The Gulf nation, competing in only their second World Cup appearance, looked destined for another painful defeat before captain Boualem Khoukhi produced a stoppage-time equaliser that sparked wild celebrations among players, officials and supporters.

Switzerland appeared on course for victory after Breel Embolo’s first-half penalty gave them the lead in San Francisco.

The Swiss were awarded the spot kick in the 17th minute when Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler inside the penalty area.

Following a lengthy VAR review, referee Said Martinez confirmed the decision before Embolo calmly converted from 12 yards.

It was a deserved lead for Switzerland, who dominated possession and created numerous opportunities throughout the contest.

Dan Ndoye was particularly wasteful, missing several promising chances that could have effectively ended the game before halftime.

Qatar, meanwhile, struggled to create openings and relied heavily on disciplined defending to remain in the contest.

Their star player Akram Afif found little space against a well-organised Swiss defence, although he briefly threatened late in the first half when he created an opportunity for Edmilson, whose effort was saved.

As the match entered stoppage time, Switzerland looked set to collect all three points.

However, in the 94th minute, Homam Ahmed delivered a superb cross into the box where captain Boualem Khoukhi rose highest.

His header took a slight deflection before finding the back of the net, sending the Qatar bench into ecstasy and securing a historic result.

Players and officials stormed the pitch in celebration as the final whistle confirmed the nation's first World Cup point.

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui described the result as another dream achieved for his team.

“We achieved one dream when we arrived here, to be here, and now today is another little dream,” he said.

“And we have the right to continue having the dream.”

Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, whose earlier foul led to Switzerland’s goal, was relieved and delighted after the match.

“This is the first point in the history of the Qatari national team. Praise be to God in all circumstances,” he said.

“Honestly, the match was played with great determination from everyone.”

For Switzerland, the result felt like a missed opportunity.

Despite producing 26 goal attempts compared to Qatar’s seven, Murat Yakin’s side failed to convert their dominance into victory.

“We had an idea and we wanted to be very dominant, very attacking,” Yakin said.

“We created very good chances, but unfortunately we weren't always efficient. Maybe we weren't smart enough, not precise enough in the end.”

The draw leaves Group B completely open, with all four teams level on one point following Canada’s 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

While Switzerland will regret their missed opportunities, Qatar leave San Francisco with renewed confidence and a historic achievement that could prove significant in the race for qualification.
