Beware of Fake NIN Update Links, NIMC Alerts Nigerians

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians to disregard a fraudulent online campaign offering free corrections of National Identification Number (NIN) records through an unauthorised portal.

The commission described the offer as a phishing scam designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public and steal sensitive personal information.

In a public advisory issued on its official social media platforms on Tuesday, NIMC urged Nigerians to exercise caution and avoid interacting with suspicious links circulating online. According to the commission, fraudsters are increasingly exploiting public interest in identity management services by creating fake websites and misleading social media posts that appear legitimate.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the agency stated. The commission reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and has not been compromised.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the statement added.

NIMC emphasised that any request for corrections, updates or modifications to NIN records should only be carried out through officially approved channels.

The agency advised citizens seeking changes to their identity records to either use the commission’s self-service portal or visit authorised enrolment centres across the country. It further urged members of the public to verify information through its official communication platforms before responding to any message related to identity registration or record updates.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over cybercrime and digital identity theft, with scammers increasingly targeting personal data that can be used for financial fraud and other criminal activities.

NIMC encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious messages, websites or social media posts claiming to offer identity-related services outside the commission’s approved platforms.

The commission reiterated that protecting personal data remains a shared responsibility and urged citizens to take extra precautions when accessing online services connected to their identity records.
