
Bayelsa Police Arrest Father, Son With Four Illegal Guns Hidden in Sack

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his 36-year-old son for alleged unlawful possession of four single-barrel firearms in Bayelsa State.
The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday, 68, and Oyabrade Tibi, 36, both from Futoro Gbene Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area, were arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation by operatives of the Anti-Vice Unit.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, the arrest was carried out on Monday, July 6, 2026 at about 10:30 a.m along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.
Mohammed said the suspects were travelling in a commercial tricycle when they were stopped by police operatives.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered four single-barrel guns concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in an attempt to hide the items.
The suspects allegedly told police that they were travelling to Abua in Rivers State at the time of their arrest.
The police spokesperson said the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yenagoa, for a detailed investigation to determine the origin of the firearms and identify any other persons who may be connected to the alleged offence.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Yenagoa, for discreet investigation to ascertain the source of the firearms and identify any other persons connected with the offence,” Mohammed said.
The command, under Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel Edebor, reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the circulation of illegal firearms and combating violent crimes across the state.
Police also urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and maintaining public safety.
