Governor Ademola Adeleke has extended the state’s health insurance coverage to traditional rulers and their queens as part of efforts to expand access to affordable and quality healthcare services across Osun State.

The initiative, carried out through the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS), saw the presentation of insurance cards to monarchs and their families during the governor’s commissioning of the Osun Health Insurance Agency (OSHIA) Multipurpose Hall.

Speaking at the event, Adeleke described the new facility as another step towards strengthening public institutions and improving healthcare delivery in the state.

He said the administration remained committed to building a healthcare system that ensures residents can access medical services without facing financial difficulties.

“I am elated to commission the newly completed OSHIA Multipurpose Hall, a modern facility built to enhance the operations of the Osun Health Insurance Agency and provide improved service delivery to the people of Osun State,” Adeleke said.

The governor said the enrolment of traditional rulers and their queens represented a major step in expanding healthcare access, adding that the initiative would ensure royal families benefit from medical services under the state insurance programme.

“The free enrolment initiative is another bold step by our administration to ensure that traditional rulers and their queens enjoy access to quality healthcare services without financial hardship,” he said.

The Executive Secretary of the Osun Health Insurance Agency, Dr Rasaq Akintunde Akindele, said the decision to enrol traditional rulers was aimed at strengthening public confidence in the health insurance scheme.

According to him, monarchs remain influential figures within their communities and can help promote wider participation in social health insurance programmes.

“Our revered Royal Fathers are custodians of our culture and trusted voices within their communities. By enrolling them on the scheme, we are empowering them to serve as ambassadors for social health insurance,” Akindele said.

He added that the involvement of traditional institutions would encourage more residents to embrace the scheme and support the state’s goal of achieving universal health coverage.

The governor’s administration said the expansion of the programme forms part of broader efforts to improve healthcare accessibility and strengthen social protection for residents across Osun State.
