Suspected gunmen have abducted three students of the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State, with police confirming that one of the victims has since been rescued while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining two.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at Living Seed Lodge, an off-campus student residence located in a bushy area on the outskirts of the university's student community in Lafia.
Confirming the development on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, Ramhan Nansel, said the command received a distress report from the university's Chief Security Officer (CSO) at about 9:20 p.m on Tuesday.
According to Nansel, the CSO reported that three students residing at the lodge had been abducted by suspected armed men.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Mohammed, directed the immediate deployment of tactical units, patrol teams and other security personnel to the scene.
"The operatives swiftly mobilised and launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation within the surrounding forest," Nansel said.
He disclosed that the police operation led to the successful rescue of one of the abducted students.
The police spokesperson added that security operatives have intensified efforts to rescue the remaining two students still in captivity and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
He assured residents that the command remained committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and restoring the victims safely.
Nansel also urged members of the public to remain calm, stay vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could aid ongoing operations.
He further advised residents to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station to enable swift security response.
