The Anambra State Government has strongly condemned the attack on the convoy of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Chief of Staff Ben Nwankwo, describing the incident as a serious threat to public safety and security.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening along the boundary between Orumba North and Awka South local government areas as Nwankwo was returning from an official engagement. According to reports, suspected armed assailants ambushed the convoy between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. in what security sources believe may have been an attempted abduction.
Although the Chief of Staff escaped unharmed, the attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of four persons, including two police officers attached to his security detail.
Eyewitnesses said security operatives accompanying the government official responded immediately, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that ultimately prevented the suspected kidnappers from carrying out their mission.
The exchange of gunfire however, led to casualties among members of the convoy.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, the state government expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
The government described the attack as an assault on the peace and stability being pursued across Anambra State and assured residents that security agencies had commenced investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible.
“The government remains committed to sustaining the gains already recorded in the fight against insecurity and criminality across the state,” the statement said.
Authorities stressed that the incident would not weaken ongoing security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring public confidence in law enforcement efforts.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has consistently maintained that his administration will continue strengthening collaboration with security agencies to combat violent crime and protect residents.
Security agencies have since intensified surveillance and launched manhunts in surrounding communities as investigations into the attack continue.
The state government urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security authorities by providing credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent similar incidents in the future.
