Political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections in Kano State took a dramatic turn on Thursday after former governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, formally endorsed Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate for the forthcoming elections.

Kwankwaso also announced that Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna would contest for the Kano Central Senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC.

The endorsements were contained in a statement issued by the former governor, who described the decision as one rooted in equity, fairness, competence and loyalty to the ideals of the party and the Kwankwasiyya movement. According to him, the values guiding the endorsements remain essential to sustaining unity, discipline and political progress within the movement.

“Alhamdulillah! I am delighted to announce that His Excellency, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has been selected as our Kano NDC Gubernatorial Candidate for the upcoming elections,” Kwankwaso stated.

“Similarly, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna will contest for the Kano Central Senatorial Seat.”

The former governor noted that the party would proceed with its affirmation process in preparation for the elections, expressing optimism that the exercise would be peaceful and successful. He also prayed for electoral victory for the party in the forthcoming polls.

The announcement is expected to significantly reshape political alignments within Kano, where the Kwankwasiyya movement remains one of the most influential political blocs in the state.

Observers believe the endorsements may further consolidate the movement’s influence ahead of what is already shaping into an intense political contest in Kano State.
