The United States secured a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 in Seattle on Friday.
Playing without injured captain Christian Pulisic, the Americans delivered another composed performance to record their second consecutive victory in Group D and book a place in the Round of 32.

The breakthrough came through an Australian own goal before Alex Freeman doubled the lead with a first-half header that was confirmed after a VAR review. The United States then managed the game effectively to preserve a clean sheet and seal qualification.
The victory follows the USA's convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay in their opening match and leaves Mauricio Pochettino's side on six points from two games. The Americans could still finish top of Group D depending on the outcome of the remaining group fixtures.

Australia, who opened their campaign with a surprise 2-0 victory over Türkiye, improved after the break but failed to convert their chances and now face a decisive final group match in their bid to reach the knockout rounds.
Elsewhere on Friday, Morocco edged Scotland 1-0 after scoring in the opening minute, while Brazil defeated Haiti 3-0 to move level with Morocco on four points in their group.

The United States became one of the first teams to secure qualification for the expanded 32-team knockout phase of the tournament, continuing an impressive start on home soil.
