US Senate Approves $70bn for Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

The United States Senate has approved a $70 billion funding package aimed at strengthening immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, handing the administration one of its most significant legislative victories on border security and migration policy.

The legislation provides substantial funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol for the remainder of Trump’s current term in office.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, where Republican leaders are expected to fast-track consideration before forwarding it to the President for assent.

The approval followed months of political wrangling over immigration enforcement policies and funding mechanisms, including disagreements over how immigration officers conduct operations and the scope of enforcement powers available to federal agencies.

The Senate’s approval came after a lengthy amendment process that exposed divisions within the Republican Party over several controversial policy initiatives associated with the Trump administration.

Among the most contentious issues were proposals involving an “anti-weaponisation” compensation fund for individuals who claimed they were unfairly targeted by government institutions, as well as funding earmarked for security around a proposed White House ballroom project.

Several Republican senators expressed concerns that such provisions could become political liabilities ahead of upcoming elections.

Democrats, meanwhile, argued that Congress should prioritise addressing housing affordability and economic pressures facing Americans rather than expanding immigration enforcement operations.

Despite the disagreements, Republican lawmakers ultimately rallied behind the bill, arguing that additional funding was necessary after earlier budget disputes left key immigration agencies without long-term financial certainty.

The passage of the legislation represents a major boost for Trump’s immigration agenda while highlighting continuing tensions within the Republican Party over some of the President’s broader policy priorities.
