The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded Nigerian travellers to strictly comply with the terms of their visas, warning that violations such as overstaying authorised periods could jeopardise future opportunities to travel, study or work in the United States.

The advisory was issued in a message posted on the mission’s official X account on Tuesday as part of ongoing efforts by US authorities to maintain the integrity of the country's immigration system and reduce cases of visa abuse.

The mission urged Nigerians travelling to the United States for education, employment, tourism or other legitimate purposes to respect the conditions attached to their visas and remain within the duration approved by immigration authorities.

According to the embassy, compliance with immigration regulations is not only a legal obligation but also an important safeguard for future travel prospects.

“Staying compliant with U.S. immigration laws isn’t just the right thing to do; it protects your future and keeps opportunities open for Nigerian travelers,” the mission stated.

The US Mission advised travellers to ensure their immigration documents remain valid and updated throughout their stay and to avoid actions that could negatively affect future visa applications.

“Whether you’re studying, working or visiting the United States, always honour the terms of your visa. Follow the rules. Stay only for as long as you are authorized. Keep your documents updated. Make choices that safeguard your dreams,” the statement added.

The embassy explained that respecting immigration procedures benefits both travellers and bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States.

When you respect the process, everyone wins,” the mission noted.

The reminder comes amid continued efforts by US immigration authorities to address visa overstays and strengthen compliance with immigration regulations.

Officials say adherence to visa conditions helps preserve access to legitimate travel channels while protecting the integrity and credibility of the US visa system.

The mission reaffirmed that Nigerians who comply with immigration laws are better positioned to retain future travel, educational and professional opportunities in the United States.
