US Congressman Urges Review of Nnamdi Kanu’s Case

A member of the United States House of Representatives, John James, has called on the Nigerian Government to ensure that all legal proceedings involving the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, are conducted in accordance with constitutional guarantees and internationally recognised human rights standards.

The call followed the adoption of Resolution H.Res. 1321 by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 22, 2026, after a motion reportedly sponsored by James.

According to the resolution, the United States Secretary of State is encouraged to engage Nigerian authorities on issues relating to Kanu’s detention, legal rights, access to healthcare and adherence to due process requirements.

The document expressed concerns surrounding the circumstances of Kanu’s arrest in Kenya and his subsequent transfer to Nigeria in June 2021, noting that questions have been raised by legal observers and international bodies regarding compliance with established legal procedures and international obligations.

The resolution also referenced findings issued in July 2022 by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which concluded that Kanu’s detention violated certain international human rights obligations and recommended remedial measures.

Lawmakers urged Nigerian authorities to carefully consider those findings and take appropriate steps consistent with international legal commitments.

Among the issues highlighted were Kanu’s access to legal representation, detention conditions, medical treatment and broader fair-trial guarantees.

The resolution stressed the importance of ensuring that detainees receive humane treatment and that judicial processes remain transparent, fair and consistent with the rule of law.

James further called on Congress and the U.S. State Department to maintain engagement with Nigerian authorities on concerns relating to due process and respect for fundamental rights.

The case of Kanu has remained one of Nigeria’s most closely watched legal and political matters, attracting significant domestic and international attention since his return to Nigeria in 2021.

Observers believe the latest intervention by the U.S. Congress could generate renewed international scrutiny of the ongoing proceedings while reigniting debate over legal, political and human rights dimensions of the case.

Nigerian authorities have consistently maintained that Kanu is being prosecuted in accordance with the country’s laws and judicial processes.
