A devastating late-night fire outbreak destroyed no fewer than 16 lock-up shops at the NIPOST Shopping Complex in Dugbe Ibadan, after a road accident involving a vehicle triggered a massive blaze.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Saturday, sending panic through the busy commercial district and prompting an emergency response from firefighters.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed that the fire was reported at exactly 11:37 p.m., prompting immediate deployment of firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adedeji. According to preliminary investigations, the inferno was caused by a serious road accident involving a saloon car.
The vehicle reportedly crashed into a giant billboard located in front of the Nigerian Railway Corporation premises before somersaulting and splitting into two.
Fire officials explained that the rear section of the vehicle rolled uncontrollably into the row of shops within the NIPOST complex, where it exploded and ignited a fire that rapidly spread through several business outlets.
Firefighters from both the Oyo State Fire Services Agency and the Federal Fire Service launched a coordinated operation to contain the blaze. Their swift intervention prevented what could have become a much larger disaster.
Authorities confirmed that while 16 shops were completely destroyed, the firefighters successfully saved the main NIPOST building, several adjoining shops and nearby commercial properties from being engulfed by the flames. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded during the incident.
The fire service commended its personnel for their rapid response and professionalism during the operation. The agency also praised officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Iyaganku Divisional Headquarters for providing adequate security and crowd control throughout the firefighting exercise.
Officials have advised motorists to observe traffic regulations and drive cautiously to reduce the risk of accidents that could trigger similar disasters.
