UN Calls for Violence-Free Schools Amid Rising Abductions

United Nations expresses concern over continued captivity of pupils and teachers while urging full implementation of safe school standards.

The United Nations has called for renewed commitment to protecting children, teachers and educational institutions in Nigeria following recent school abductions in Oyo and Borno states.

The appeal was made by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Malick Fall, during a meeting with officials of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre in Abuja.

Fall described the continued captivity of schoolchildren and teachers as deeply troubling, stressing that educational institutions must remain places of learning and safety rather than targets of violence.

He expressed concern over reports that recent attacks had resulted in the deaths of educators and left families, communities and school authorities traumatised.

According to him, the incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger protection measures, more effective emergency response systems and full implementation of the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools.

The UN official urged authorities to adopt a more data-driven approach to protecting vulnerable schools and communities while ensuring rapid response mechanisms are available whenever threats emerge.

While commending efforts by Nigerian security agencies and government authorities, Fall called for intensified actions to secure the release of all abducted pupils and teachers and ensure those responsible face justice.

He emphasised that protecting children’s right to education in a safe and dignified environment must remain a national priority.
