The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning British nationals against all but essential travel to Kwara and Benue states while maintaining existing restrictions for several other parts of the country.
The updated guidance, issued on July 1 by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), added Kwara and Benue to the list of states where only essential travel is advised.
According to the advisory:
“FCDO now advises against all but essential travel to Kwara State and Benue State.”
The FCDO also stated that it continues to advise against all travel and all but essential travel to other parts of Nigeria, depending on the security situation in each location.
North-East
The UK government continues to advise against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states.
It also advises against all but essential travel to Bauchi State.
North-West
The advisory maintains its recommendation against all travel to Katsina and Zamfara states.
British citizens are also advised against all but essential travel to Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states.
North-Central
In the North-Central region, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states, including areas surrounding the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
South-South
The advisory also remains in force for parts of southern Nigeria, with the FCDO advising against all travel to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
The UK government described these as river and swamp locations that are accessible mainly by boat rather than by road.
The FCDO regularly reviews its travel advice based on its assessment of security conditions, including risks associated with terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime and civil unrest. The latest update reflects the UK’s current guidance for British nationals planning to visit or reside in Nigeria.
