Two Die in Ogun Road Crash as FRSC Blames Speed Violation

Two people were killed on Monday in a fatal road traffic crash involving a Lexus car and a motorcycle along the Leme axis of the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, attributing the crash to a speed violation and warning motorists and motorcyclists about the dangers of excessive speeding on the nation's roads.

The command's Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Odunsin, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to Odunsin, the crash occurred at about 5:45 p.m and involved a black Lexus car with registration number KJA 398 JR and a black TVS motorcycle with registration number AYT 837 QU.

He said the FRSC rescue team received a distress call at about 5:50 p.m. and arrived at the scene five minutes later to commence rescue and recovery operations.

"A total of six adult males were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, two adult males lost their lives, while no injury was recorded among the other persons involved," Odunsin said.

The deceased victims were evacuated by FRSC rescue personnel and deposited at the State Hospital, Ijaye Mortuary, in Abeokuta.

The rescue team also recovered some personal belongings from the crash scene, including an identity card and a Tecno mobile phone, while the damaged vehicles and other obstructions were cleared to restore the free flow of traffic along the busy route.

The command said preliminary findings indicated that the crash was caused by a speed violation, underscoring what it described as the persistent danger posed by excessive speed on Nigerian roads.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged road users to exercise greater caution while driving or riding.

Ogunjobi particularly appealed to motorists and motorcyclists to obey prescribed speed limits, remain vigilant and avoid dangerous driving practices.

He stressed that speeding significantly reduces a driver's reaction time and can increase the severity of injuries and fatalities when crashes occur.

The FRSC Sector Command reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety across Ogun State through sustained enforcement of traffic regulations, public enlightenment campaigns and prompt emergency response services.

The command also urged members of the public to promptly report road traffic crashes and other emergencies through the FRSC's national emergency toll-free number, 122, or to the nearest FRSC patrol team.

The latest crash comes as road safety authorities continue to warn motorists against excessive speed and other dangerous driving behaviours, particularly on major highways where high traffic volumes and speed can quickly turn preventable incidents into fatal crashes.
