Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after substitute Mikel Merino struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal, ending Cristiano Ronaldo's illustrious World Cup career.
Merino emerged as Spain's unlikely hero in the 91st minute, calmly finishing past goalkeeper Diogo Costa after being played through by fellow substitute Ferran Torres in a contest that appeared destined for extra time.
The victory sends the European champions into the last eight, where they will face either co-hosts United States or Belgium.
For Portugal, however, the defeat marked the end of an era.

At 41, Ronaldo had already confirmed that the 2026 tournament would be his final FIFA World Cup, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that has spanned more than two decades and established him as one of football's greatest-ever players.
Spain started brightly and should have taken the lead inside three minutes when Dani Olmo's incisive pass released Mikel Oyarzabal, but the striker dragged his effort wide with only Costa to beat.
The Portuguese goalkeeper then produced two excellent saves in quick succession to deny Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena, keeping his side in the contest.
Portugal gradually settled and almost struck before half-time when Nuno Mendes unleashed a powerful left-footed drive that deflected off Pedro Porro before crashing against the crossbar.
Despite the opportunities at both ends, the first half ended goalless.

The second half offered little attacking quality as both sides cancelled each other out.
Portugal enjoyed more possession after the interval but struggled to create clear openings, while Ronaldo often found himself isolated against Spain's disciplined defence.
Bruno Fernandes fired into the side-netting midway through the half, while Spain saw another promising effort blocked by Ruben Dias as both teams appeared to be preparing for extra time.
But with penalties looming, Spain produced the decisive moment.
Following a quickly taken free-kick, Torres threaded an intelligent pass into the path of Merino, who composed himself before sliding a low finish beyond Costa to spark wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.
Although Ronaldo remained on the pitch until the final whistle, the Portugal captain struggled to influence proceedings.
He managed only one effort on target and was largely contained by Spain's organised backline, finishing the match with limited involvement in the attacking third.

The defeat officially ends Ronaldo's World Cup journey, having featured in six editions of football's biggest tournament.
After the final whistle, an emotional Ronaldo was consoled by several Spanish players, including teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, in a moment many viewed as symbolic of football's changing generation.

Spain continue defensive masterclass
While Merino delivered the winning goal, Spain's defence once again laid the foundation for victory.
The clean sheet means Luis de la Fuente's side have now gone six consecutive World Cup matches without conceding a tournament record and remain the only team yet to allow an opponent to score at the 2026 finals.
Spain will now turn their attention to Friday's quarter-final, where they await the winner of the last-16 clash between the United States and Belgium.

Martinez steps down
Portugal's elimination also brought an immediate managerial change, with Roberto Martinez stepping down as head coach after the defeat.
His departure follows Portugal's failure to mount a serious challenge for the title despite entering the tournament with one of Europe's most talented squads.
For Spain, however, the dream of adding a second FIFA World Cup crown to the title they won in 2010 remains firmly alive.
