Soludo Immortalises Chinua Achebe With Statue in Ogidi, Vows to Raise New Literary Giants

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has unveiled a statue in honour of Nigeria's literary icon, Chinua Achebe, pledging to preserve the celebrated novelist's legacy while creating opportunities to nurture a new generation of world-class writers.

The monument, unveiled on Saturday at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, commemorates Achebe's enduring contributions to African literature and global culture, 13 years after his death.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Soludo described the late author as a symbol of excellence whose works continue to shape generations across the world.

"Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world's greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State," the governor said.

Soludo said his administration remains committed to preserving the literary giant's legacy while investing in programmes that encourage young people to pursue excellence in literature, education and the arts.

The unveiling ceremony drew government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, literary enthusiasts and residents who gathered to celebrate the life and achievements of the renowned author.

Also speaking at the event, the Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, described both Achebe and Governor Soludo as global ambassadors whose achievements have brought honour and recognition to Anambra State.

Widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, Achebe gained international acclaim with his landmark 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart, one of Africa's most influential literary works. The novel has been translated into dozens of languages and remains widely studied in schools and universities around the world.

The Anambra State Government said the monument is expected to preserve Achebe's memory while promoting the state's rich cultural heritage and boosting literary tourism in Ogidi, the hometown of the celebrated novelist.

Chinua Achebe died on March 21, 2013, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 82 following a brief illness. He was laid to rest on May 23, 2013, in his hometown of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
