Man Rescued Unhurt After Being Trapped in Elevator on Lagos Island

Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have rescued a man who was trapped inside an elevator at a three-storey building on Freeman Street, Zapass, Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

The occupant was rescued unhurt after the elevator reportedly malfunctioned, with no casualty recorded during the operation.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Controller-General, Margaret Adeseye, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the emergency was reported to the service at about 11:50 a.m.

A first-response crew from the Ebute Elefun Fire Station arrived at the scene approximately five minutes later, at 11:55 a.m, and immediately commenced rescue operations.

The firefighters successfully accessed the elevator and brought the trapped occupant to safety without any injuries.

The service said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was caused by an accidental malfunction of the elevator.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the incident was caused by an accidental elevator malfunction. No casualty was recorded during the operation,” the statement said.

The swift response by the fire service prevented the incident from escalating, with the occupant safely evacuated from the faulty elevator.

The incident once again highlights the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of elevators and other mechanical installations in residential and commercial buildings, particularly in densely populated urban areas such as Lagos.
