The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a social media influencer accused of spreading false security information that triggered panic among residents of Eket and surrounding communities.
The suspect, identified as Akaninyene Udo, a native of Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area, allegedly used his Facebook platform to circulate claims suggesting that Boko Haram terrorists were preparing to launch attacks within the area.
According to police authorities, the alarming post generated widespread fear and concern among residents, many of whom interpreted the message as a credible security threat. The suspect reportedly operates on social media under the name “AK Philo.”
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, the command said investigations were launched after the controversial post went viral across social media platforms. The police revealed that the post carried the message, “Eket get ready for us,” accompanied by a photograph depicting an armed bandit.
Authorities said the publication caused significant anxiety within the community and prompted urgent security assessments.
“The suspect was apprehended following investigations into a viral social media post in which he circulated a threatening message accompanied by an image of an armed bandit,” the statement said.
According to the command, the content was capable of inciting panic and undermining public confidence in the security situation across the state. Police investigators subsequently traced the source of the message and arrested the suspect.
The command disclosed that investigations have now been concluded and preparations are underway to prosecute the suspect in accordance with relevant provisions of the law.
The police further revealed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend any other individuals who may have participated in creating, sharing or amplifying the false security alert.
Authorities stressed that there is currently no known threat of a Boko Haram invasion or similar terrorist activity in Eket or any other part of Akwa Ibom State.
The command reassured residents that security agencies remain vigilant and that the overall security situation in the state remains stable and under control.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command wishes to assure the good people of the state that there is no cause for alarm,” the statement added.
Police also urged citizens to exercise caution when consuming or sharing security-related information online, advising residents to rely on official government and security agency channels for verified updates.
The command warned that the deliberate dissemination of false information capable of causing public panic remains a criminal offence and that offenders would face legal consequences.
As social media continues to play a major role in information dissemination, security agencies say the responsible use of digital platforms has become increasingly important in preventing unnecessary fear and protecting public order.
