The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially announced the overland arrival of no fewer than 1,100 Nigerian migrants who returned to the country from Agadez, a well-known transit hub in the neighboring Niger Republic.
The large-scale arrival has triggered the activation of a multi-agency federal and state humanitarian emergency framework in Kano State. Frontline personnel from multiple border management, civil defense and social welfare ministries have been deployed on-site to systematically process, counsel, profile and facilitate the safe, structured reintegration of the returnees with their respective families across different states.
Providing explicit logistical details of the operation on Friday, Anthony Akuneme, the Commandant of the Immigration Training School in Kano, confirmed that the massive contingent of returnees is undergoing strict administrative and security clearance protocols to prevent identity fraud and ensure public safety.
The security architecture relies on advanced technological tracking to accurately catalog the incoming population:
Biometric Input Stage: Returnees are first documented using the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) located at the Migrants Arrival, Knowledge and Information Area (MAKIA).
Reintegration Phase: Following electronic screening, individual returnees are transferred directly to the International Transit and Stay of Knowledge (ITSK) center. At this facility, officers conduct final security profiling, specialized psychosocial counseling and coordinate logistical transport support.
The federal intervention is designed to address both the immediate security risks of irregular border crossings and the long-term socioeconomic vulnerabilities of the returnees. Command officials noted that many within the demographic had endured severe physical hardships while trying to traverse the Sahara Desert. The multi-agency camp will remain operational around the clock until the final profiling and family tracing cycles are concluded for all 1100 individuals.
