The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that three passengers lost their lives following the derailment of a train operating on the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor.
The confirmation comes hours after the Corporation announced that an incident had occurred involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS), prompting the deployment of emergency response teams to the scene.
Although details surrounding the circumstances of the derailment remain sketchy, the NRC said rescue personnel and relevant authorities were immediately mobilised to provide assistance to affected passengers and assess the extent of the damage.
The tragic development marks one of the most serious incidents recorded on the rail corridor in recent times and has raised fresh concerns about rail safety and infrastructure maintenance across the country.
Railway officials have yet to disclose the total number of passengers involved or whether additional casualties or injuries were recorded.
The Corporation said investigations are ongoing and assured the public that further details would be released as soon as a comprehensive assessment is completed.
The Warri–Itakpe standard gauge rail line is one of Nigeria’s strategic transport corridors, linking Delta and Kogi states while serving thousands of passengers and businesses.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and rely on official updates as emergency operations continue.
More details are expected.
