An Abeokuta Magistrates Court has remanded a 73-year-old man, Olarenwaju Hamid, over allegations that he repeatedly sexually abused a 15-year-old girl under his care, resulting in pregnancy, before allegedly attempting to procure an abortion.

The defendant was arraigned before the Magistrates Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, on a two-count charge of unlawful carnal knowledge and attempting to procure an abortion.

His plea was not taken during Wednesday's proceedings.

According to the prosecutor, Saheed Abiodun, the alleged offences were committed in March 2026 at Idi-Ori, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The prosecution alleged that Hamid, who served as the teenager's caregiver, had unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim on several occasions, resulting in her pregnancy.

Abiodun further told the court that the defendant later attempted to procure an illegal abortion by allegedly offering the victim ₦50,000 to terminate the pregnancy.

The prosecutor subsequently filed an ex parte application seeking an order to remand the defendant for an initial period of 60 days pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

He said the alleged offences contravene Section 32 of the Ogun State Child's Rights Law and Section 228 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

In her ruling, Magistrate A.K. Araba granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Oba Correctional Centre pending the issuance of legal advice by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The matter was adjourned until September 14, 2026, for mention.

Allegations of sexual abuse involving minors are regarded as grave criminal offences under Nigerian law. The charges against the defendant have not yet been tested in court, and he remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty."
