The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will tentatively kick off its 2026/27 season between August 27 and 29, following the approval of a new football calendar by key stakeholders seeking to improve the organisation and commercial appeal of domestic football.

The proposed start date was agreed at a joint meeting in Abuja involving officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), NPFL management and club owners as preparations gather momentum for the new campaign.

Under the approved calendar, the season will run through May 28, 2027, with fixtures for the President's Federation Cup also incorporated into the schedule to ensure a more structured and predictable football season.

Beyond the new calendar, the 2026/27 campaign is expected to usher in a new financial era for Nigerian club football.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, had earlier announced that the winners of the 2026/27 NPFL title will receive a record ₦1 billion in prize money, the highest champions' reward ever offered in the history of Nigeria's top-flight league.

The landmark prize forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the league's commercial value, improving competitiveness among clubs and attracting greater private-sector investment into Nigerian football.

Stakeholders believe the enhanced financial incentive will encourage higher standards across the league while making the NPFL more attractive to sponsors, investors and football fans.

The new season will also feature four promoted clubs following the conclusion of the 2025/26 Nigeria National League campaign.

Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees and Doma United secured promotion to the NPFL after successful campaigns in the second tier and will replace the four clubs relegated at the end of the just-concluded season.

They join a highly competitive top flight that will once again feature defending champions Enugu Rangers, who enter the new campaign as the team to beat after capturing a record-extending ninth NPFL title in the 2025/26 season.

With an earlier kickoff date, a structured competition calendar and an unprecedented ₦1 billion champions prize, football authorities hope the 2026/27 season will mark another significant step in the ongoing transformation of Nigeria's domestic league.
