France produced another commanding performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Sweden 3-0 at MetLife Stadium to book a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Paraguay.
The evening belonged to captain Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice to become the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history. His brace also took him level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament's Golden Boot, with six goals each.
Despite the comfortable scoreline, Sweden frustrated France for much of the opening half before Mbappe eventually broke the deadlock just before the interval.
France began brightly and almost found an early breakthrough when Mbappe finished past Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside in the 18th minute.

The French continued to dominate possession and create chances. Mbappe struck the post from close range after a dangerous low delivery into the penalty area, while Michael Olise also came within inches of opening the scoring when his spectacular volley crashed against the upright.
Sweden's goalkeeper kept his side in the contest with a string of impressive saves, repeatedly denying the French attack as Les Bleus piled on the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 44th minute.
Receiving the ball inside the area, Mbappe shifted onto his right foot before driving a low finish beyond Zetterstrom to hand France a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Sweden attempted to respond after the restart but struggled to create meaningful opportunities against France's disciplined defence.
Instead, France doubled their advantage in the 51st minute through Bradley Barcola.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Olise before calmly slotting a low finish into the far corner to make it 2-0.

The French remained firmly in control and continued to threaten on the counterattack. Olise, who was instrumental throughout the contest, saw another effort saved before setting up France's third goal.
In the 73rd minute, the winger delivered another incisive pass into the path of Mbappe, who timed his run perfectly before curling a composed finish beyond the Swedish goalkeeper for his second goal of the night and France's third.
With the result effectively secured, France made several substitutions, withdrawing Mbappe and Olise to a standing ovation from the crowd after both delivered outstanding performances.

Sweden's best opportunity arrived late in the match when Viktor Gyokeres found himself through on goal, but goalkeeper Mike Maignan reacted sharply to preserve France's clean sheet.
The final whistle confirmed an emphatic 3-0 victory for Didier Deschamps' side, who extended their impressive World Cup campaign with another dominant display built on attacking quality, defensive solidity and Mbappe's historic achievement.

France will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 encounter against Paraguay as they continue their pursuit of a third FIFA World Cup title.
