The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed relief and gratitude over the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were recently abducted, describing their return as a moment “worthy of thanksgiving” while renewing his call for stronger security measures to protect schools and communities across Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Obi commended the security personnel and all individuals involved in securing the children’s freedom, acknowledging the efforts of those who worked behind the scenes to ensure their safe return.

“I am greatly relieved and delighted to learn of the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were kidnapped. I sincerely thank all those whose tireless efforts made their freedom possible, especially the security personnel and everyone who worked behind the scenes,” he said.

While celebrating the successful rescue, Obi warned that the recurring abduction of schoolchildren remains one of Nigeria’s most disturbing security challenges, stressing that such incidents should never become a recurring feature of national life.

He said no Nigerian child should be subjected to the trauma of kidnapping or forced to pursue education under the constant threat of violence, urging governments at all levels to prioritise the protection of lives and property.

According to him, ensuring the safety of schools and learning environments must remain a national priority if Nigeria hopes to build a secure and prosperous future.

Obi further emphasised that every Nigerian child deserves access to education in an atmosphere of peace and security, rather than fear and uncertainty.

He called for sustained and coordinated efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and prevent future attacks on schools and innocent citizens.

The former Anambra State governor also rejoiced with the rescued children, their families, school authorities and Nigerians, describing the successful rescue as a reminder that determined collaboration among security agencies and relevant stakeholders can produce positive outcomes.

He expressed hope that the country would continue to take concrete steps toward ending kidnappings and creating an environment where children can learn and thrive without fear.
