A 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after sustaining severe injuries from a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv Ukraine, just days before she was scheduled to graduate from medical school.
Marian, a student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was caught in the June 29 attack on the Kholodnohirskyi district, where Russian forces reportedly launched aerial bombardments.
According to a statement from the university, she suffered life-threatening injuries and was first treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for advanced care. Despite intensive medical efforts in both countries, she did not survive.
“As a result of enemy shelling, Nnani Adaobi Marian was seriously injured. Doctors fought for her life until the last moment… unfortunately, despite all efforts, they could not save her,” the institution said.
The university described her as an outstanding student who enrolled in 2020 and consistently excelled academically. It noted that she had pursued international academic exposure, including programmes at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in 2025, where she participated in research and clinical development.
Reports indicated that Marian was travelling with a friend for a graduation photoshoot when the strike occurred. Both students were expected to receive their medical degrees the following day.
The June 29 bombardment reportedly killed several people across Ukraine and injured dozens more, deepening concerns over escalating civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict.
