Nigerian Man Allegedly Dies After Police Torture in South Africa, Association Demands Justice

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the alleged killing of a Nigerian national, Mr. Chika Ibe, during a police operation in Cape Town, calling for an immediate independent investigation into the incident.

According to the association, the incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville, Cape Town, where officers of the South African Police Service (SAPS) allegedly assaulted the victim.

NICASA alleged that Ibe, an indigene of Lokpaukwu in Abia State, died after being subjected to severe beating, torture, inhumane treatment and alleged suffocation during the operation. 

In a statement, NICASA President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, described the allegations as deeply troubling, warning that if established, they would amount to a grave violation of human rights and the rule of law. 

“These allegations are deeply disturbing and, if confirmed, constitute a gross violation of human rights and the rule of law,” Onyekwelu said. 

The association called on South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the leadership of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to launch an independent, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ibe’s death. 

NICASA insisted that any officer found culpable should face the full weight of the law. 

“Every officer found responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no justification for torture, excessive force, or the unlawful taking of human life,” the association stated. 

While expressing solidarity with the deceased’s family and the Nigerian community in South Africa, NICASA appealed for calm, urging Nigerians to remain peaceful and avoid any form of retaliation.

The association also pledged to work with the Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa and the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the matter is thoroughly pursued until justice is served. 

As of the time of filing this report, South African authorities had not publicly responded to the allegations, and the circumstances surrounding Ibe’s death had not been independently verified.
