A horrific act of mob justice has thrown the Maraban Jos community in Kaduna State into turmoil after an enraged crowd stormed a police station, dragged out an Islamic teacher being held for her safety and burned her alive over a false child theft allegation.

The victim, identified as Malama Ummulkhairi, was a respected Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children.

According to family members and witnesses, she had travelled from the New Maraban Jos area to attend an Islamic lecture but became separated from her companions and lost her way.

While attempting to locate the venue, she reportedly approached some children in the neighbourhood to ask for directions.

The encounter quickly sparked panic after some residents allegedly accused her of being a child kidnapper, prompting a crowd to gather around her.

As tensions escalated, officers from the Maraban Jos Police Division intervened and took her into protective custody to prevent her from being lynched by the mob.

Family members who rushed to the police station reportedly attempted to explain her identity and persuade residents that she was innocent of the allegations.

However, the crowd continued to swell and eventually descended on the police station.

Witnesses said the mob overwhelmed officers on duty, forced its way into the facility and dragged the woman out.

She was subsequently beaten, a tyre was placed around her neck, and she was set ablaze in a brutal attack that left her dead before security reinforcements could arrive.

The Kaduna State Police Command condemned the killing, describing it as an act of criminality, savagery and a direct assault on the rule of law.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed that several suspects linked to the incident had been arrested and that investigations were ongoing.

“No person or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands,” Hassan said.

“The Commissioner of Police warns that the Command will not tolerate jungle justice, mob action or attacks on police formations and personnel. All culprits will face the full weight of the law.”

The command said a comprehensive investigation had commenced and assured residents that all those involved would be identified and prosecuted.

The killing has sparked widespread outrage, with residents and civil society groups warning about the dangers of mob justice, misinformation and the growing tendency to bypass lawful judicial processes.

Many have called for swift prosecution of those responsible and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in communities across the country.
