A pregnant woman and a young man have been killed in a fresh attack on Dyan Community in Rim Village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, sparking renewed concerns over the persistent wave of violence in parts of the state.
The victims were identified as Mrs. Happiness Pam, 32, who was pregnant at the time of her death, and 24-year-old Daniel Luka.
The killings were confirmed by the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), which described the attack as a tragic and unacceptable act of violence against innocent citizens.
In a statement issued on Friday, the association's leadership, headed by Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, said it received reports of the attack with deep shock and sadness, noting that the incident had once again plunged the community into mourning.
According to the group, the continuous targeting of defenceless residents, including women and young people, underscores the security challenges confronting communities in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State.
The association lamented the loss of Mrs. Pam, describing her death as particularly heartbreaking given that she was carrying an unborn child, while Daniel Luka was said to have had a promising future ahead of him.
"It is heartbreaking that a pregnant woman carrying the hope of a family and an innocent young man with a promising future have become victims of yet another senseless act of violence," the statement said.
BYM noted that the killings represent not only an attack on the victims but also an assault on the peace, security and humanity of the affected communities.
The group extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, the people of Dyan Community, Rim Village and the entire Riyom Local Government Area, praying for strength and comfort for those affected by the tragedy.
The association called on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
It also urged both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government to adopt more proactive measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
According to BYM, the recurring attacks and killings across communities in Plateau State have become intolerable, stressing that residents deserve to live in peace and pursue their daily activities without fear.
"The people of Plateau State deserve to live in peace, cultivate their farms, and carry out their daily activities without fear of attacks, killings, or displacement," the statement added.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, peace, security and the protection of lives and property across Berom communities and Plateau State as a whole.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the attack.
