Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has approved the immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state following security concerns linked to mining operations.
The directive was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Gebon Timothy Kataps, who said the decision was based on credible security reports indicating threats capable of undermining the peace currently enjoyed across the state.
According to the statement, the state government will establish a new task force to oversee security and safety within the mining sector after the identified threats have been addressed.
The government directed all local government councils and traditional rulers to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order across their respective jurisdictions.
Authorities also warned that any violation of the directive would attract serious consequences, urging residents to report suspected breaches to the nearest security agency.
The statement disclosed that the state government has concluded plans to meet with artisanal miners next week to brief them on new security measures and vigilance requirements.
Kataps said the government remains committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring that mining activities resume only under a secure and properly regulated environment.
He called on residents to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report suspicious activities that could threaten peace and public safety in the state.
