From Baby Bath to World Cup Final: The Incredible Messi-Yamal Photo That Came Full Circle

What began as a routine UNICEF charity photoshoot in 2007 has become one of football's most extraordinary stories, as Lionel Messi prepares to face Lamine Yamal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final 19 years after cradling him as a baby.

Some football stories are written by goals, trophies and unforgettable victories. Others are shaped by extraordinary coincidences that only reveal their significance years later.

As Argentina and Spain prepare to battle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title, one remarkable image has become the emotional backdrop to the biggest match in world football.

Nearly two decades ago, a young Lionel Messi gently held and bathed a three-month-old baby during a UNICEF charity photoshoot at Barcelona's Camp Nou. On Sunday, that same baby Lamine Yamal will stand across from Messi in the World Cup final, each hoping to lead his country to football's greatest prize.

What was once an ordinary charity photograph has become one of the game's most unforgettable full-circle moments.

When the image resurfaced on social media in 2024, many fans refused to believe it was real.

The photograph showed Messi, then a fresh-faced 20-year-old Barcelona star, carefully bathing an infant Yamal in a small plastic tub while posing for a charity calendar.

With artificial intelligence-generated images becoming increasingly common, many assumed the picture had been digitally manipulated.

It hadn't.

The photograph is authentic.

It was taken on October 31, 2007, during a fundraising project organised by the Barcelona Foundation in partnership with Catalan newspaper SPORT to raise money for UNICEF.

At the time, Messi was still building his reputation at Barcelona. He had not yet won a Ballon d'Or, lifted the FIFA World Cup or established himself as one of football's greatest-ever players.

Yamal, meanwhile, was just three months old.

No one involved in the photoshoot could have imagined how history would eventually connect the two.

How Fate Brought Them Together

The charity project featured Barcelona first-team players posing with babies and young children from different communities across Catalonia as part of UNICEF's fundraising campaign.

Yamal's family became involved after taking part in a community initiative in Rocafonda, a neighbourhood in Mataro, northeast of Barcelona.

Through a raffle linked to the programme, the family earned the opportunity for their newborn son to participate in the charity calendar.

There was no guarantee which Barcelona player they would meet.

It could have been Ronaldinho, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes or any other member of the club's star-studded squad.

Instead, destiny paired baby Lamine Yamal with Lionel Messi.

Born on July 13, 2007, Yamal was only a little over three months old when his mother, Sheila Ebana, carried him into Barcelona's dressing room at Camp Nou for the photoshoot.

The session lasted around 30 minutes.

It would eventually produce one of football's most iconic images.

Messi Was Unsure Around Babies

Photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the photographs, has since recalled that Messi looked nervous throughout the session.

Despite already being recognised as one of football's brightest young talents, the Argentine remained shy and reserved away from the pitch.

Holding a baby was unfamiliar territory.

Oriol Canals, who worked in the marketing department of SPORT and helped organise the project, later joked about Messi's awkwardness.

"Messi was as stiff as a broom. I suppose that was because he'd never held a baby in his life."

To make the baby smile, Monfort improvised by bringing out a small yellow plastic duck from his daughter's toy collection.

Even the bathtub and towel featured in the famous photograph came from the photographer's own home.

At the time, it was simply another assignment. Nobody imagined it would one day become one of football's most treasured images.

The Forgotten Photo That Returned

For years, the photograph attracted little attention. After the charity calendar was published, it quietly disappeared into archives and remained largely forgotten.

That changed dramatically in 2024, as Yamal emerged as Barcelona's newest sensation and helped Spain win UEFA Euro 2024, his father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared the old photograph on social media.

The response was immediate.

Within hours, millions of football fans were sharing the image around the world.

Many questioned whether it had been generated using artificial intelligence because the connection between Messi and Yamal seemed almost impossible to believe.

The viral photograph reignited interest in the people behind it, including photographer Joan Monfort, who admitted he never imagined the image would become historic.

Reflecting on the moment years later, Monfort described the photograph as something that had become deeply personal because of everything that followed.

From Charity Calendar to Football History

The image gained even greater significance after UNICEF confirmed its authenticity.

The organisation explained that it had been taken during a fundraising calendar project involving the Barcelona Foundation and SPORT newspaper.

UNICEF also highlighted another remarkable twist.

Both Messi and Yamal have since become UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, dedicating part of their careers to advocating for children's rights and supporting humanitarian causes worldwide.

The organisation described the photograph as a powerful reminder that football can create connections that extend far beyond the game itself.

Two Generations, One World Cup Final

Now, the story reaches its most extraordinary chapter.

Messi, now 39, enters what could be the final World Cup match of his legendary career as Argentina seek to defend the title they won in Qatar four years earlier.

Across the pitch will be 19-year-old Yamal, the teenage sensation widely regarded as the future of world football after an astonishing rise with Barcelona and Spain.

For Messi, victory would further cement an already unparalleled legacy.

For Yamal, lifting the World Cup would mark the arrival of a new global superstar.

The symbolism is impossible to ignore, one player represents a generation that transformed football, the other is expected to define the next.

A Story Football Could Never Script

Football has always been rich with unforgettable stories, but few carry the emotional weight of this one.

An infant who would grow into one of the brightest talents the sport has ever produced.

Nineteen years later, they meet on opposite sides of the centre circle with the FIFA World Cup trophy waiting for one of them.
