Four persons were trapped on Saturday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed along Sultan Road in Kano metropolis, triggering a frantic rescue operation by emergency responders.

The incident occurred at about 9:00 a.m, according to eyewitnesses and workers at the construction site.

As of the time of filing this report, three victims had been rescued from the rubble and taken to Sir Muhammadu Sanusi Specialist Hospital for treatment, while rescue teams continued efforts to reach a fourth person believed to be trapped beneath the debris.

Witnesses at the scene said workers noticed signs that the structure had become unstable while construction was ongoing on the upper floor.

One of the construction workers, Shu’aibu Yaro, said the supervising engineer quickly detected the structural defects and instructed everyone to evacuate the building.

According to him, the warning came moments before the building suddenly collapsed.

Yaro said those trapped included a security guard attached to the construction site and a commercial tricycle (Keke Napep) rider who was close to the building when it caved in.

He confirmed that the three rescued victims, including the security guard and one of his colleagues, sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately transported to Sir Muhammadu Sanusi Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Emergency responders remained at the scene as of press time, combing through the debris in a race to rescue the remaining trapped victim.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been officially established, while relevant authorities are expected to commence investigations into the incident.
