A major fire outbreak on Friday engulfed a 5-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Ibru Jetty Complex, Apapa Lagos, destroying its contents but causing no casualties.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the incident occurred at the oil terminal located along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway near Coconut Bus Stop in Olodi Apapa.
Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the agency received a distress call at 12:04 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo Fire Stations.
She disclosed that emergency teams arrived at the scene at about 12:16 p.m and commenced efforts to contain the blaze.
According to Adeseye, the fire involved a 5-million-litre diesel (Automotive Gas Oil) storage tank that had been completely engulfed by flames.
She said firefighters, working alongside emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, successfully brought the situation under control and completely extinguished the fire by 1:54 p.m.
The coordinated response, she noted, prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure within the terminal, averting what could have been a far more devastating industrial disaster.
"The prompt intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining tanks and critical infrastructure, thereby minimising potential losses. No casualty was recorded," Adeseye said.
The fire service said the cause of the incident has not yet been established and remains under investigation.
The agency also commended emergency responders and stakeholders whose swift collaboration ensured the successful containment of the fire and prevented further damage at the oil facility.
