LASTMA Averts Major Disaster as Gas Tanker Catches Fire in Ikorodu

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it prevented what could have become a major fire disaster after a gas tanker caught fire along the Owode Elede corridor inward Ikorodu.
According to the agency, the incident involved a 60-tyre mini gas tanker that developed a mechanical fault while in transit.
LASTMA said emergency responders discovered a leakage of compressed gas during an initial assessment of the vehicle. The leaking gas later ignited, triggering a fire around the tanker.
The agency said its Rescue and Recovery Team immediately mobilised to the scene alongside personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Through what it described as a coordinated emergency response, officials were able to contain the blaze before it spread, preventing what could have become a major explosion capable of endangering lives, destroying property and damaging critical road infrastructure.
To minimise disruption to motorists, LASTMA operatives implemented temporary traffic management measures by opening an alternative route.
The agency said one serviceable lane, together with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, was used to maintain controlled vehicular movement while emergency operations continued.
As a result, traffic along the affected corridor remained largely free-flowing despite the ongoing rescue and firefighting activities.
Commending the emergency responders, LASTMA General Manager praised the swift collaboration between the agency and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, saying their prompt intervention was crucial in preventing a potentially devastating incident.
He also urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, exercise caution around emergency scenes and cooperate fully with rescue personnel during such operations.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining traffic flow and providing rapid emergency response services across Lagos State.
